KODINHI - A WONDER LAND OF TWINS

Kodinhi is a sleepy hamlet in Malappuram district of Kerala state, some 15 kms away from our University (University of Calicut). The village, located in Nannambra panchayat,  should have remained as one of the rural, backward  and Muslim dominated towns here. The village has now caught national and international attention by having a large birth-rate  of twins. The number of pairs of twins born on the soil of Kodinhi with a population of less than 15000  has now crossed  the figure  200. The  birth rate of twins  is on a continuing note here.  The surprising concentration of twins in this village has triggered off  research by various individuals and institutions. The schools in the village and nearby places have dozens of pairs of twins studying for various classes, many of them identical and same sex. Many funny stories are doing rounds in the schools about the teachers finding it difficult to identify the twins. The local people too face similar piquant situation. The 'identity crisis' is not confined to schools alone. There are also jocks that the newly-wed couples of Kodinhi often mistake their partners for the other twins of the pairs in the beginning of their conjugal life!

The mammoth birth rate  of twins in the village still remains as a mystery coupled with curiosity for everyone. Research by scientific and biological teams has begun to unravel the mystery of the large scale birth of twins here.Recently, a national team of geneticists from the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology , Hyderabad  visited  the village for studies. Such high birth-rates of twins have not  been reported from anywhere in the world, except certain places in Nigeria and Spain

The National Geographical Channel, the  international news agency, Reuters and Khaleej Times of Saudi Arabia  are also due to visit Kodinhi to record the interesting phenomina found here.

The genetic, biological, molecular ,heriditery and climatic factors of  the puzzling phenomina are the subject matter of the research on the multiple births at Kodinhi . Its  interesting to note that the women married off from Kodinhi and also married to the youth in Kodinhi too have been giving birth to twins. The first time known twins of the village are now 59 year old Kunhikadiya and Alavi ( female and male respectively). The youngest of the twin hierarchy here, born to Rubina-Nisar couple, are a boy and girl, Mohammed Imran and Fathima Hiba, who are turning 27 days on this day (Monday, 24.11.2008).There were instances of the birth of triplets also here. The latest case is that  Salma Beevi, wife of  Hassan has given birth to three baby girls three months ago.

While the strange and wonderful phenomina of extra-ordinary concentration of twin births in this village continues,  an in-depth study on the various factors to find out its causes has become highly essential.

MAHE - A PARADISE OF BOOZERS

Mahe or Mayyazhi  is a small and calm town situated on the west coast of Indian peninsula. Sandwiched between the Calicut and Cannanore districts in Kerala state, Mahe, appearing to be a part of Kerala,  belongs to the Union Territory of Pondicherry. While travelling from the northern end of Kerala to the southern part and vice-versa, one has to go through Mahe. The travel to this direction from north   starts  from Mangalore, Cannanore, Tellicherry, Mahe , Badagara and so on. Mahe catches the eyes of the travellers due to its serene atmosphere and charming ancient  monuments .

This picturesque  former French town has an area of 9 Sq.Kms with a population of over 36,ooo. In fact, some of Mahe citizens have citizenship in France also and they vote in the periodical French elections. The intense political rivalries and clashes in the nearby Tellicherry, which are of a constant nature, never have an impact on the citizens of Mahe. They live in total unison and peace.

Despite all its credits and advantages, what brings Mahe more popularity or rather notoriety is literally the  easy and free flow of liquor here. At the entry points to Mahe from two directions of Vatakara and Tellicherry, the long row of liquor shops begin. The smell of liquor pervades through the air and fill the surroundings of the town. You can find umpteen number of liquor shops and bars on either side of the national highway passing through the town. Big hoardings of liquors of different brands adore the liquor shops-cum-bars,soliciting the customers of various hues.

Mahe with a population of more than 36000 has, on a rough finger counting, nearly  100 shops. As against the actual annual requirement of 51 lorry loads of liquor, about 1,000 to 1500 lorry loads are imported into the nine-square-kilometre region situated adjacent to Kerala. Literally, liquor is flowing through this small town. Here, the prices of liquor are very low, compared to the prices prevailing in the neighbouring state of Kerala. For a paltry sum of Rs.150/- one can get a full-bottle of a choice brand, which costs three times its price in the nearby retail shop in Tellicherry or Vatakara. If you are still lavish, you can visit the bar attached to the shop and consume half bottle liquor with a sumptous food for Rs.100/-.Thats Mahe and its main attraction.

On one evening last week, I happened to have a stop-over at Mahe on my way back from cannanore to Calicut. I made a round-up of the city to have a glimpse of the liquor business. I was wonder-struck to see the very brisk liquor business going on there.I found a large number of people standing in front of the shops to buy liquor. All the bars in the town were  packed to the full. The customers who had swarmed the shops and bars were mostly youth, all in a highly inebriated state.

I was quite concerned and alarmed over the social and economic decadence of a region where the liquor reigns the rule.I enquired from the local people about the far-reaching implications and evils brought about by the free liquor trade. They said all the efforts to bridle the flourishing liquor trade by the prohibition activists and organisations have found no results. The trade continues unabated, pushing the people to the peril. The youth from nearby places like Vatakara, Tellicherry are mostly affected, having fallen prey to the tentacles of liquor barons.

I watched Mahe throught that evening. Its  charmness  and calmness have transformed to grim revelry and chaoes . The famous Mayyazhi puzha ( Recall Mumundan's famous novel 'Mayyazhipuzhaude Theerangalil') was flowing silently,  pretending that she was not knowing whats happening on  her shores. The St.Therase's statue in the famous Mahe church in the heart of the town was standing as a mute witness to all the unholy  happenings around it. I also had found 2 or 3 de-addiction centres little away from Mahe, an inevitable fall-out of a degradation of a denigrated society. I left Mahe in utter grief and  despair and with prayers for its well-being sooner or later.

VANAJA GOT BACK HER LOST BAG

I don't know about Vanaja Teacher till today afternoon. She became very familiar to me after a very freak incident today.Today, I was having a very hectic activity in my Department. The entrance test for admission to the much-awaited Ph.D programme for 2008 is scheduled to be held on Saturday, the 22nd November. All the applications numbering nearly 70 have to be processed and admission cards to the eligible candidates were to be sent today.I have to single-handedly do all such work. Of course, Sheeba, my Typist on a 3 month assignment is there. But she is quite incapable to attend the work, unless I specifically ask her to do the right things.or she will simply fumble.
I completed the whole work by 2pm, Poor Sheeba prepared the list on the computer.Everything is ready.I thought all the cards could be sent tomorrow.Meanwhile, our HoD Prof.Sreedevi told me she has to leave for home urgently, as her servant didn't turn up today..ok.ok..the things were going on as usual. Why can't have a cup of tea after a hell of things for the day, for a relaxation .Called up my young friend, Siju to come to the canteen.. Jamal Sahib should also be called there for a company. we three went to the canteen for the tea. Sahib wanted to take some application format from the net.Come to my Department and you can take the print from there. We went to the English Department.
I occupied my seat. The phone bell was ringing continously .I picked up the receiver. The person at the other end enquired if you have a teacher by name Vanaja in your English Department. Vanaja..no, no, we don't have a teacher namely Vanaja here.Is it Dr.Janaky Sreedharan, I quipped? No, no, the person contested. Then, out of curiosity, I asked what happened? He told, he has got a bag containing cash and other valuables from the Tellicheery railway station. He found an identity card from the bag with the name Vanaja, a teacher of English from Mahathma Gandhi College. He thought she is a teacher from Calicut University and tried to contact our Department. He's calling to get to her. I just asked for his details. He is Mr.Jerish and his mobile number is 9745707503.Well, Jerish, I shall try to locate her and get back to you. Meanwhile, keep the things safely with you
After all, she is an English teacher..with my inquisitiveness, I could somehow get in touch with her..It was almost 4.30pm.whom to contact? From the description of Jerish, I thoght she is a teacher in the Mahathma Gandhi College, Mahe.So how to get to that college and person. This MG college was a part of our University a decade back. I recalled, they had the Pre-degree course. But now, the college is a part of Pondicherry University. I referred to the diaries of our and Kannur University, but not found the telephone number of the college.
I determined something should be done to locate the teacher.Jerish, an unknown person, is making a sincere effort to get back the lost bag to her.Mahe is a well-known place.I called up our counterpart Department in Tellicherry, but no one was picking up the receiver. What to do? Its nearing 5,0 clock. The offices would be closed soon . How to get to MG College and Vanaja Teacher? The teacher may be heart-broken over the loss and running helter-skelter ..She may have very costly ornaments and cash in the bag? My thoughts were going to unimaginative levels.
Ok..I went to our HoD's cabin, where we have the internet connection.I just searched for MG college,Mahe, atleast to get the telephone number of the college.
But, the web page of the college had all the out-dated information. It has only the details of the defunct Pre-degree course. No details of any use found.Im really sorry that in the present day of advancement of IT and related fields, the college has no information of its own on the net..I was not to be cowed down.Again, I searched on Google for Mahe. I got the telephone numbers of all prominent institutions of Mahe..I got the college telephone number..that is 2332319..But no STD code is given in the page! I was wonder-struck over the carelessness of the so-called experts. How to get that code.I called up Mr.Kuniyil Chandran, former Deputy Registrar of Kannur University, whose house is nearby Mahe to grt the code..He told the code of Mahe is 0490.Oh.what a difficult task to get to the teacher..may be..whose carelessness has driven me to all such extrenous exercise..i'm determined to reach the person in any way.
It was around 5.05pm.i was afraid someone would be there in the college..i rang up the number.Luckily, someone picked up the receiver.I told im calling from calicut university and want to know whether you have a teacher namely Vanaja on the rolls.he was not sure..may be a night watchman .he called another person from the office.he isMr.Sukumaran.he confirmed they have a teacher.but she has gone to Delhi..oh..my God.my efforts to locate her falling down? I told him the story and gave him my number..somehow, you find her number and inform her the matter.. and let me know the things.I took the number of Sukumaran as well (9745214792), thinking that would also be of some use for me in my search for Vanaja Teacher.
I didnt want to leave the matter there. I called Jerish..I have located her..she is a teacher in MG College, Mahe.
He told..sir..hearing your first information, im just reaching the college.i was spell-bound to see the honesty and sincerity of an apparent rural boy.. to give back her lost bag..ok..very good, Jeresh..go ahead i told
Meanwhile, it seems the college man informed the teacher about the developments.i got a call on my mobile frm a Mahhe number, 04902342949 from Vanaja teacher..She was quite ignorant about the loss of her bag.She has apparently heared that she has lost something from calicut University..she was asking..what happened? ..i haven't come to the Calicut University today or for that matter, for the last few weeks..I haven't lost anything? then why this hullaballoo?
I told..madam..i got the information from a youth from Tellicherry, thinking that you are teaching in our University..I just made my efforts to locate you..now im happy its suceeded..please look for your bag..Then only, she searched for her bag at her home! Alas..it's not just there.Oh..its really missing..thank God (should it for me)..please give me the number of that boy..i told her he's already in your college..
While I post this incident at sharp 10.15 pm night today.i was recalling all the travails and efforts I made for a real sake and also, the sincere efforts of a lovely youth for his spirirs to restore the lost valuables to a teacher.
But..Im sorry..Vanaja didn't call me back informing me of the return of her lost bag..I don't know whether she reciprocated to that boy also,
WE SHOULD NOT EXPECT POSITIVENESS FROM ALL GREAT ACTS..

BAVA VAIDYAR-A MIRACULOUS HEALER

Bava Vaidyar - A Miraculous Healer

Meet Mr.Mohammed Kutty alias Bava Vaidyar, a simple and unassuming man of 65 years from Feroke here. He is a miraculous healer for the snake-bite victims here in Calicut and nearby areas. when the modern allopathic medicines failed to give succoor and life to victims of bites of poisonous snakes, it was the indigenous natural medicines prepared by Vaidyar that gave re-birth to them. Thanks to his powerful medicines, many people have survived the deadly snake-bites.

The life of Mr. Vaidyar is fully dedicated to the cause of providing relief and life to the people in distress and agony. He is not after publicity. The people who got re-birth at his precise and immaculate hands have words of high esteem and appreciation to the uncanny capabilities of the healing touch of this man. The true testimony of his silent healing powers come from his benefactors. No media has given any coverage to this extra-ordinary man. The instances of his life saving are spread from mouth to mouth of those who got relief from him.

Vaidyar's family has been in the field of traditional treatment of poison-related ailments, especially the snake-bites, for the last so many decades. When there was no modern medicine, the medicines made by the family from the rare medicinal plants found on the mountains and hills were used for the treatment of the snake-bite victims. The same formulae is still adopted by Vaidyar for the treatment even now. Its a constant and difficult task to collect the dwindling medicinal plants from various far-off places, all single-handedly done by Vaidyar. The great tradion of the miraculous healing set by his great grand father Kalanthankutty Vaidyar, is still being pursued by Vaidyar literally with his magic wand.

Vaidyar has so far treated hundreds of snake- bite victimes and brought them back to life. In fact, he has broght back to life many snake-bite victims, who were given up by the alternative system of medicine. Many supposedly dead persons of snake-bites were re-lived by Vaidyar. He has cured the victims of bites of venmous snakes, like viper, cobra, python, cornsnakes etc. He never takes any fees from the victims. The entire treatment is free of cost. It seems he fulfills certain obligation to the humanity by means of his self-less service. He attributes all his healing powers and capabilities to the God.

I  have a known classic example of his life-saving mission officer. Mr.Vijayan, who was working as a Circle Inspector of Police of Nallalam was bitten by a viper one day around 7pm near the Feroke Guest House. Instead of rushing  him to the nearby Calicut Medical College, he was taken to Vaidyar by some local people. The medicines applied on his wounds and also given to him found good results after some 5 to 6 hours. He opened his eyes around 1 am . Mr.Vijayn still recalls the treatment and acknowledges with gratitude that but for the treatment by Vaidyar, he says he would not have survived. He still maintains good friendship with Vaidyar who he says has given him re-birth.

The treatment of Vaidyar is not confined to snake-bites alone. He also treats with his natural medicines for skin-diseases, especially soriasis, asthama and jaundice. Many people have benefited from his treatment, all at a faster pace.

Further, Vaidyar has made elaborate research on all natural methods of treatment. As a result, he is making a SOLID MERCURY BALL( RASAMANI) after long and continous efforts, blending all traditional medicines and  mercury with divine prowess derived from intense prayers. The usage of this ball on the body will ward off all misfortunes, dangers and calamities from your life. This will also bring about happiness, prospirity and peace in your life, says Vaidyar.

The miraculous healer may not be knowing about this post, but he still remains a good friend and saviour of hapless victims of  deadly snake-bites.

A Psychological Treatment

Its a fascinating story of a couple friend of mine, who went to the Psychiatry Department of a famous 'multi-speciality' hospital in Calicut for counselling. The couple in their late thirtees of late had been feeling mutual distrust, leading to discords and quarrels in their family life. The wife accuses the husband of infidelity and addiction to liquor, while the husband charges her with non-committment and non co-operation to him.She alleges that the other partner has an illicit affair with a woman, claiming that she has heard a conversation between them recorded in his mobile phone.

The husband brushes asides all such allegations, saying that she has got some general problems found with wives suspecting their husbands for each and everything. He says he has recorded some concocted conversation in his mobile to be heard by her to toe her in line and he goes for liquor to have some peace of mind.

The quarrels have become very frequent with no solution in sight. As a family friend, I enquired about the problems with them and got these allegations and counter-allegations.My advice to go for a 'forget and forgive' approach by them had no effect. They stuck to their stand. I felt some psychological help is required to help them I then advised them to go for a psychological counselling to save them from being broken. They agreed to this. Now, it was the search for a clinical psychologist.Dr.Promudu is a well-known psychologist, who can tackle your problem. He was contacted. But he is not now in Calicut, he having shifted to Cochin. They can't go to Cochin either. There was a local ad of a 'psychologist' highly proficient in such treatments. Why go to him ?. Dr.Promodu was again contacted. 'Don't go to quacks. You go to Dr.Sarada Mohan in Calicut'.But she is too busy for the next one week.At last, they reached the famous hospital I mentioned above. The following is the story they told me about their visit to the hospital.

They were given appointment to meet the psychologist at 2.00pm.They reached there well before the time with much optimism. The consultation fee was Rs.150.After a long wait, they met the psychologist. The psychologist, looking to be a bright girl just outside the college dressed in churidar, asked the issues between them. The wife raised the same story, while the husband contested them except his alchoholism.Do you drink daily? How many pegs do you take at a stretch, 3 or 4 or on a day as a whole? Do your hands shiver on waking up in the morning? No, no, I don't drink that much nor my hands shiver. My problem is stres-related arising out of the disturbance of mind due to the above problems, he replies.

Ok. You should be admitted to the hospital soon and should undergo a treatment for a week-here.But madam, I think I can manage alcoholism, if at all that is a problem. But what I should for this stress Im facing? The wife's all hopes were shattered, as none of her woes were addressed by the psychologist. It seems she had anticipated some positive counselling from her like that of Dr.PM.Mathew Vellore and Dr.Promodu.She had seen them on various TV programmes giving solutions and advice on many a family problem. The lady psychologist then referred them to the Psychiatrist of the hospital, who is seated in the nearby room.

Its payment of another consultation fee of Rs.150 and a wait of 1to 2 more hours. The same story was repeated to the psychiatrist. Regarding alchoholism, you have no problem. there is no withdrawal system, no deviation from your thoughts and activities, you work properly in your college, he told the husband. Here also, they expected some counselling to set right the broken wings. But Doctor, for this stress what should I do? How can I control it? He immediately prescribed some medicines.Ok.you should take them twice in a day and meet me after 10 days to see the improvement in you.The husband was apprehensive. The medicines may be strong and he would have to continue taking them for long. They returned from the hospital with disappointment after a long ordeal.

I think now their quarrels and problems have come to an end after their visit to the Hospital!

A Tribute to Dr.TK.Ramachandran

Dr.T.K.Ramachandran, an eminent scholar and a Lecturer of our Department passed away on 21.07.2008. For quite some time, Teekey, as he was fondly called, had not been keeping well. He had not been coming to the Department since its re-opening in June due to ill-health. Last week only, the Department received a letter from him informing of the fixing of the Ph.D viva-voce of a student under his guideship on 22nd September. This itself shows how concerned he was about his academic pursuits and activities even when he was not well.

Towards the fag end of his life, this versatile literary critic and a marxian theoretician was living in a life of seclusion. An ardent revolutionarist of late 1970s, Teekey was a classic example of a true marxian ideologist, wedded to the cause of proletarianism and humanity. He also fought the religious chauvinists and communalism.

On knowing about the news of his death, I went to Cochin with Dr.B.Sreedevi, our HOD, Dr.Moideenkutty of Arabic Dept, Librarian Jayasree and three of our students to attend his funeral. We were there in the sad moments of an irreparable loss until he was laid to rest at the Ravipuram cemetry. Though he is no more, Teekey lives in our minds, of his students, colleagues and the society. His memory never fades from us.

Im giving below the condolence message on his demise released by my Department today

The meeting of the teachers, staff and students of the Department of English and other staff of the University of Calicut express our deep sense of grief at the sad and untimely demise of Dr.T.K. Ramachandran, Lecturer of English Department on 21.07.2008.

Dr.T.K. Ramachandran was a scholar, literary activist, theoritician, writer and teacher of great eminence, who left an indelible mark on the various academic , literary and social works he was involved in. He was a well-known social and literary activist, prolific writer, endearing teacher, loving colleague and above all a good friend and magnificent person with humane qualities. He was also a literary critic endowed with progressive perceptions and ideologies.

His departure is a great loss to the Department of English, Universityof Calicut, academic community, particularly of English teachers and students and also to the literary world. .His contibutions and services to the world of letters and society will be gratefully remembered.

We convey our profound condolences to the bereaved family of our departed colleague.

We also convey our sincere gratitude to the faculty members, students and staff of other departments on the campus, who have joined us in this hour of sorrow.

Its Very Cruel

Its Very Cruel

The other day, I had been to a very famous hospital in Calicut to visit a few patients there.I found the hospital staff very cordial and pleasant. The doctors and other paramedical staff were all very considerate and caring to the patients, a hallmark for the success of a good hospital. The hospital wards and premises were maintained very neat and tidy throughout.

All is well here. But there is a deviation, I found, from the rosy picture and the all-is-well state of affairs in the multi-speciality hospital, which is managed by an NRI businessman. I noticed uniform-clad young women manning the various entry points , operation theatres and ICU in the hospital. Why I observed them was that in no other private hospital here, women are employed as security personnel. I found them standing in the same spot both in the morning and evening, when I visited the hospital twice that time one day.

I was little eager and concerned to find the young women in their late twenties continuously standing for hours together without being able to sit on a stool or chair. I just made myself friendly with one of them and enquired about their job.I got some alarming facts. These poor ladies were engaged as security guards by some private Security agencies contracted by the hospital. They have to work in shifts. One has to work for hours as long as 10 to 12 hours at a stretch.. all continously standing!

These hapless women from poor surroundings and most of them with families to look after are paid very meagre salaries. They get some Rs.2400/= per month. From this measly amount they get, they have to part with Rs.800/= to the agency as their commission. So on an average, they get Rs.53/= per day, when a male labourer in Kerala earn anything between Rs.250-300 per day and a female labourer earn around Rs.200/= per day. Is it not a sheer and 'dignified' exploitation of women at the hands of the contractor and the hospital?

The matter does not end here. Has the hospital, which boasts of health care for all, ever thought of the health hazards and risks caused to these indigent women under their nose by making them to keep on standing for long hours ? The constant standing by women for long hours would expose them to abdominal and gynaecological disorders , making irreparable losses in their lives.Their internal organs are getting incapacitated due to the long physical endurances of this sort. Not knowing this, they are doing their job with a smile, disregarding all odds and risks...all for a little earnings.

Kerala is a progressive state ruled by the Left Democratic Front led by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) with all safeguards for good working conditions for labourers. We have also a Labour welfare department and a Commission for Women here to monitor the working conditions of labourers and to safeguard the interests of women. Hundreds of people including political leaders, social workers and Government officials visit the hospital daily. Don't they see the sad plight of these women? The miserable plight of these women continues to haunt my mind.

Something should be done to protect these women from the sheer exploitation and injustice they are subjected to.

OBINNA GETS BACK HIS LOST EAR AT CALICUT

OBINNA GETS BACK HIS LOST EAR AT CALICUT

Obinna Ekwom, a 32-year-old Nigerian youth is now happy, thanks to the doctors at the Baby Memorial Hospital here, after undergoing a long traumatic and painful period following a grievous injury afflicted on his ear by an attacker, almost damaging his ear.A victim of attack at his home town in Enugu in Nigeria in July last, in which the top part of his ear was bitten off, Obinna had almost lost his ear.

The search for a proper and effective treatment at affordable cost to reconstruct his damaged ear through the internet took Obinna to the far-flung place in another continent, the Baby Memorial Hospital in Calicut, Kerala state, in India.A final and complicated ear reconstruction surgery was performed on him last week at the hospital under the leadership of Dr.KrishnaKumar,Surgeon and expert in plastic surgery.

A two-part surgery by Dr.Krishnakumar and his team of doctors at the hospital helped him get his ear reconstructed.

He came to the hospital in July last,2007 for the surgery procedure. The first phase of the surgery was done in July, where the ear was reconstructed with a new cartilage taken from the side of the ear.He came back to the hospital last week and has just finished the second part of the surgery." The two parts took more than 16 hours. Its an intricate and difficult surgery, requiring precision, expertise and creativity." according to Dr.Krishnakumar.

Now the ear has been completely reconstructed to match the other ear, giving much relief and happiness to Obinna.

During his ordeal time also, Obinna had happy moments .Wedding bells were ringing for him.He got married on November 17 to Chei. She was here with him for part two of the surgery.Recuperating at the hospital with Chei by his side, Obinna said he had a pleasant and wonderful experience in Calicut. He enjoyed the city, especially the beach and food.

contented with his ear reconstructed and full, Obinna flew back to Nigeria on Sunday,December 9th.

IN SEARCH OF HER MOTHER

IN SEARCH OF HER MOTHER

The bond of love and blood has no comparison.Marchelle, an Argentine lady of 42 years , has been on a long and unending search for her mother for the last 25 years. Seems incredible? The fair lady from Beunes Aires, who has now turned to the holy and spiritual path by adopting 'Adwaitha Vedanta' reached the port city of Calicut in Kerala the other day with the hopes of locating her mother here. She now got the information that her mother hailed from Calicut and her long pursuit in search of her took Marchelle over here.

Merchelle was actually born to Indian parents in Beunes Aires.Immediately after her birth, her Indian parents entrusted her to an Argentine couple and returned to India.

Similar to the scenes in an emotion-choked movie sequence, Merchelle came to know about her real parents only after her teens. Her foster-mother Clara revealed her that her mother was an Indian .Her long journey in search of her roots began then. She was hopeful that she would come across her mother somewhere one day.As part of her untiring exercise, she visited many parts of India looking for her parents, but to no avail.Of late , she got some credible information that her mother actually hailed from Calicut, and her name was Sujatha Nair.

She immediately came to Calicut with her intense expectation of a dream-come-true with a re-union.But this time also, her hope remained as a dream only. She could not still make a break-through in her long journey in search of her dear-ones.

Along with her journey through India, Marchelle found the inner aspects of the humanism and mysticism and was attracted to Indian spirituality. She was drawn to the Adwaitha Vedanta of Swami Dayananda Saraswathi. Giving up all the materialistic things in life, she chose the path of the pure austere life and adopted the name 'Manisha Chaitanya. She is now staying as a sanyasin in the Arsha Vidya Gurukula in Coimbatore. She wants to fully dedicate herself to the path of holiness after completing her pursuit. 'I have to see her, if she is alive. Thats my intense desire in life.'Says Marchelle.
